#InBound13

When a friend of mine mentioned they had a discount code for the Hubspot Inbound marketing conference a couple months back, I was interested but not jumping out of my skin.

When I found out that Seth Godin was one of the keynote speakers, I jumped.

So this morning I heard him speak, and I found it inspiring and engaging and funny and frightening. He talked about the "old ways" of doing things, and how we need leaders to get us away from them.
He challenged us to think not about what we are already good at that we can do more of, but instead to wonder what we SHOULD do next.
What we could fail at. What might not work.
He said that art is the only way forward.
And through all of this I imagined being back in the office, surrounded by my talented, creative colleagues, speaking to my demanding and business-savvy clients, and I imagined telling them that what we really need is to make art.
Not direct mail. Not highly-targeted, propensity-modeled paid search campaigns that we measure and optimize and report on and optimize and and and...
Art.
I love it. It's scary. I'm not sure how. I don't know if it will work.
Seth said a lot of inspiring things, but it was one of his last slides that hit home the way a manifesto (or a punch to your gut) should.
make art.
give gifts.
do work that matters.
connect.
lead.
ship.
make a difference.
And I'll add one more: do it now.
More to come.
