# Beyond Bill Shock: How Energy Brands Can Build Trust Through Affordability

It’s no secret that the economy is a top concern for Americans, and in 2026, that pressure has grown to skyrocketing levels. With nearly one in three Americans struggling to pay electric bills, energy brands face a difficult challenge: asking customers under increasing financial pressure to deepen their relationship with a provider while also asking them to take on the upfront costs of energy upgrades.

That’s why affordability can no longer be treated as a standalone pricing conversation or a marketing campaign message. To make program communications resonate — and to turn skeptical customers into engaged participants — brands need to reduce uncertainty and mental load through reliability, clarity, and the absence of unwelcome surprises. That can take the form of frictionless operations, proactive educational content, and simpler customer experiences.

Rate hikes may be an inevitable part of the future, but bill shock doesn’t have to be. Trust is essential to gaining and retaining customer confidence, especially as uncertainty around monthly energy bills and the broader economy continues to rise.

## **At the end of the day, consumers want reassurance about the basics.**

Marketing has long been viewed as an exercise in persuasion. In some sectors, that may still be enough. But in energy, the moment calls for a different approach. The work may be complex, but the best messaging themes are not.

Today’s customers are skeptical by nature, have limitless information resources and opinions at their fingertips, and are highly attuned to hidden fees buried in a sticker price. For audiences that have been burned by the fine print before, predictability messaging — locked rates, clear bill breakdowns, and no-surprise structures — will outperform headline savings or abstract percentage-off claims. Just as importantly, it can help build lasting relationships with the people you serve.

A brand’s content can help break down barriers to customer participation when clarity stays at the center of the message. Try offering one clear CTA instead of a menu of options, or leaning into social listening, community management, and social search data to build content around the questions customers are actually asking.

If there isn’t a simple next step, or if the message feels fuzzy and unfocused, the communication itself may become a dead end at best and a source of customer confusion and stress at its worst.

## **Affordability cannot be addressed through a conventional media campaign alone.**

To understand how your messaging and broader strategy are landing, ask a few key questions:

*What does your customers’ experience with your brand actually look like?*

*What state of mind are they in when they are served an ad for your program or product?*

Understanding the answers to these questions, and where your organization can add the most value along the way, can make a real difference in people’s lives. It also grounds campaign messaging and channel selection in real customer experience.

Some utilities are already showing what this looks like in practice:

1\. Earlier in 2026, [**Duke Energy Florida**](https://investors.duke-energy.com/news/news-details/2026/Energy-Bill-Assistance-Available-for-Qualified-Duke-Energy-Florida-Customers/default.aspx) removed storm cost recovery charges of about $44 per 1,000 kWh from customers’ monthly bills. The announcement was paired with new partnerships with LIHEAP, Share the Light Fund, and Florida 211 — resources that support eligible customers with additional financial assistance.

2\. [**National Grid’s Energy Affordability Program**](https://www.nationalgridus.com/NY-Home/Bill-Help/Energy-Affordability-Program) is providing tiered monthly bill credits and automatic re-enrollment for customers who have received a Home Energy Assistance Program grant.

In both examples, visible financial relief and measurable barrier removal are built into the customer experience. That’s what separates a real affordability commitment from a marketing claim. When brands put dollars back into customers’ hands without requiring them to fight for it, people notice.

## **How Education and Stress Reduction Drive Participation in Energy Programs**

Many customers who qualify for bill assistance, rate options, or energy efficiency programs simply do not know those programs exist.

The time and energy required to search for a program — and figure out whether you qualify — creates another point of friction. Instead of helping the customer move forward, it adds administrative work and uncertainty. As pressure grows on energy providers to act as proactive partners in bill management, there is a clear opportunity to remove the added stress of uncertainty through education that fits into the context of the customer’s reality.

One way to do that is to lead with the outcome of participation rather than the technology itself. In demand response programs, for example, ***many customers who could benefit from lower bills don’t participate because they assume the program will be complicated, not because they aren’t interested.***

Instead of opening with an explanation of how demand response works, start with a simple and immediate benefit: Switching laundry time to 8 p.m. could lower a customer’s energy bill this month.

Another option is to tailor messaging in ways that reflect what customers are already doing, responsibly leveraging the wealth of data at your fingertips. Historical payment and consumption data can help identify customers who may already be changing their usage habits. From there, targeted content delivered via email, direct mail, or social media can show them that they may be able to get paid for behavior they’re already practicing. In that context, participation feels like a natural next step rather than a complicated commitment.

As an essential service, the energy industry is expected to demonstrate its understanding of the economic reality of everyday people. Showing, rather than telling, customers that you understand what they’re facing each day matters more than ever: **Trust is built when what a brand says matches what a customer experiences.**

In a moment defined by economic strain and rising customer skepticism, the organizations that reduce friction, lead with clarity, and deliver real relief will be the ones that earn lasting trust.
